How to Play ZType – Complete Guide

Everything you need to know to start playing, survive longer, and reach higher levels.

Getting Started

ZType runs entirely in your browser — no download, no account, no cost. Open ztype.com and press Enter or click the Start Game button on the title screen. The game begins immediately.

The Basic Mechanic

Enemy ships descend from the top of the screen. Each ship has a word displayed on it. Type that word correctly on your keyboard to fire your laser and destroy the ship. The first letter you type locks on to the nearest matching ship automatically.

Combo Streaks

Destroying ships in rapid succession without errors builds a combo streak. Higher combos multiply your score. Let a ship reach the bottom or make too many errors and your combo resets to zero.

Game Over Conditions

The game ends when an enemy ship reaches the bottom of the screen and hits your base. You have limited lives (shown at the bottom of the screen). Lose them all and it's game over.

Levels and Difficulty

ZType has 13 levels. Each level introduces faster ships, longer words, and more enemies on screen at the same time. Early levels use short common words; later levels use long technical vocabulary and multiple ships descending simultaneously.

Kids Mode

Click Kids Mode on the title screen to switch to age-appropriate vocabulary with simpler words, slower ship speed, and a friendlier visual theme. Ideal for younger players and classroom use.

Language Selection

ZType supports 15 languages. Click the flag icon on the title screen to choose your language. The game words will change to match your selected language, so you can practice typing in English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Chinese, and many more.

Tips for New Players

  1. Focus on accuracy first — speed will follow naturally.
  2. Look at the screen, not your keyboard (touch typing technique).
  3. Target the ship that is lowest on screen first to avoid losing lives.
  4. Short words are fastest to clear — use them to maintain your combo.
  5. Practice daily for 10–15 minutes to see measurable WPM improvement.
